However, up to 60 percent of this serum is neglected and remains unused. A team of researchers and expert professors has recognized the overlooked potential of this rubber serum.
With great determination, the team has developed methods to add value to rubber serum, reducing the amount left unused and maximizing its benefits. This effort not only enhances the value of rubber but also promotes the sustainable growth of this important economic crop for the country.
Rubber has long been one of Thailand's key economic crops, but today rubber farmers face the challenge of falling rubber prices. The research team has recognized the importance of innovation to add value to rubber latex by utilizing the rubber serum, a clear liquid that is often left unused and can cause environmental pollution, as a raw material for developing dietary supplements (biopharmaceuticals) and biological medicines.
Research has revealed that rubber serum contains phytochemicals with outstanding skin-nourishing properties. It also contains Oligosaccharide-l (OS-I) or Hb-POs, a prebiotic substance that plays a crucial role in health. Additionally, the rubber serum contains enzymes that can break down polysaccharides, particularly beta-glucan from yeast cell walls, leading to the development of health and beauty products.
The research team is focused on advancing this technology to commercial production.
